I am becoming increasingly aware of how much technology is ruining our socialization skills. We have a connection to the world at our fingertips, and yet those around us are left feeling alienated and ignored.
Please hear me when I say that I am a hypocrite by complaining about this, because I find myself doing this from time to time as well. But God help, I am trying so very hard to get better at it.
Lately, nothing frustrates me more than trying to carry on a conversation with someone while their phone is in hand, and their eyes are on the screen. It has been a growing pet peeve. And again, I realize that I am JUST as guilty. I can think back on times where I’ve done that with my mom and sister...and my friends, and I cringe.
As stated above, the annoyance has been growing, though. And I’ve about reached that ultra bitchy point where I’m just going to start saying “I will finish what I have to say when you put your phone down and can at least can pretend you are listening.” It honestly makes me not want to continue the conversation with the person.
While, yes, whatever is on the phone at the time may be super important, what you are ultimately saying by not giving the person in front of you your undivided attention is: “My phone is more important than whatever you are saying.”
Just some food for thought.
