Valentine's Day with Cornbread

Photo snagged from Pinterest.
We are on the brink of Valentine’s Day, y’all. To some of you, that means boxes of chocolates, a dozen roses and a sea of stuffed animals. For others, you might plan to celebrate “Singles Awareness Day” by wearing black or a shirt donning a skull and cross bones. It’s different for everyone, I ‘spose.

I don’t know why it’s hitting me this year; but this year, I’m missing my daddy.

You see, my daddy was just good at holidays. He always seemed to make them a big deal at our house.

Even when we were young, he was almost more excited about holidays than we were. He loved to celebrate the moments.

When I was little, my daddy loved to surprise me and Mama on Valentine’s Day with stuffed animals, or a tiny box of chocolates, or balloons.  (I will add here, my mama is easy to please...her love can be bought with a Snickers bar haha).  Later on in his life, he may have fussed about how commercialized it had gotten, but would still go out and buy us a little trinket to let us know we were special and to bring a smile to our faces.

Although I am a huge believer in “not equating worth with how much was spent on something,” I think ol’ Cornbread had it right. He believed in celebrating the moments...no matter how small.

In hindsight, those little trinkets may not have cost a lot in the whole scheme of things, but they have left us with memories to last a lifetime.
