Saturday In The South: Oxford, Mississippi

 William Faulkner's Rowan Oak
I am so thankful that I work in a position that I have Fridays off. It allows me to do little 3-day weekend mini-trips. In switching jobs, the thing that gave me the most pause, was walking away from the awesome vacation hours at the Coalition. The past several years, I had taken a vacation during the Summer and one during the Winter.

Vicksburg's Bridges
Last year, my mom, my sister, and I went to Mississippi…in all Aleta fashion, we criss-crossed the state, hitting places that I have always wanted to see. It was beautiful! The streets of Laurel, the waterfront of Natchez, the bridges at Vicksburg, the ruins at Guthrie, William Faulkner's home in Oxford, the celebration of Elvis in Tupelo…it was one of the coolest trips.

The ruins at Guthrie.
Some times, when the seasons begin to change, I start longing for somewhere that I've been before. This year, I'm longing to go back to Oxford. As people are beginning to prepare for Christmas, I am remembering the exquisite lights that lit up the Oxford town square. I am remembering the crisp, cool air that we felt as we walked up to the breathtaking home of William Faulkner. I am remembering the warmth that I felt as I perused, and lingered in all of the nooks and crannies at the Oxford Square Bookstore.

Tupelo
If I had my choice, I would be in Oxford right now.  I miss it very much.
